Hits-

<o :p> </o>

Madworld – Hyper violent and hilarious, this game is a mix of one part <st1 :place w:st="on"></st1><st1 :placename w:st="on">Sin</st1> <st1 :placetype w:st="on">City</st1> and two parts MXC. A battle to the death futuristic game show (with hosts voiced by Who’s Line Is It Anyway?’s Greg Proops and John DiMaggio, the voice of Bender from Futurama), where our hero Jack uses anything at his disposal to kill opponents as gruesomely as possible. Best combination get the best points. Wrapping an enemy in a tire gets you a lot of points. Running a street sign through his head gets you even more. Impaling him on a spike on the wall get’s you even more. Do all three in a row and you’re rolling in it.

<o :p> </o>

Madworld, for my money, is the new, and better, version of what Mortal Kombat was to the gaming industry in the 90’s. Let’s face it; the fighting mechanics (which sucked, frankly) were never the appeal of MK. Actually playing MK was kind of a chore. The appeal was the over the top violence. Well, dumping a flaming garbage can over the head of an enemy and impaling him, Vlad-style, on a spike certainly fits that bill.

<o :p> </o>

This game is insanely violent, but it’s all very tongue in cheek. Or is that tongue impaled through cheek? Regardless, the massive amounts of gore and violence are belied by humour throughout. MK has lost its luster in the last couple of years and may be in jeopardy with the financial collapse of Midway. Madworld may be the new game of choice for people who want to tear their enemies in half for a couple of hours.

<o :p> </o>

Minor issues exist with the camera controls and sometimes, due to the black and white art style, it’s a little hard to find where you need to go, but for the most part it’s a very well executed (pardon the pun) game.

<o :p> </o>

Wii Music – As an actual musician, I hate Guitar Hero and Rock Band with a flaming passion. It’s just playing Dance Dance Revolution with, as The Monarch from Venture Brothers would say, “a little baby guitar.” Sorry, I play big boy guitars. Those rhythm based games are really symptomatic of a larger problem in the music industry- creativity and originality are non-factors. Don’t believe me? Look at the success of American Idol, which is more or less just karaoke on tv. None of them write their own songs, and as far as I can tell, none of them are encouraged to. Sure, they have songs written for them if they get a record contract afterwards, but wouldn’t it be more beneficial to have a songwriting competition? See who can contribute the best song to the musical world? Nope, that’s not as important as “you look pretty and can sing a high note.” And I’m sure producers and executives like Simon Cowell have found that to be the most important thing for sales. But that doesn’t make it right. It’s musical fast food.

<o :p> </o>

Anyway, back to my point, Wii Music is a whole different beast than Guitar Hero. The point isn’t simply to replicate a popular song. It’s to come up with your own version; to put your own spin on things. Using the Wii-mote and the nunchuck, you mime the motions for playing anything from a piano to guitar to electric drums to bag pipes to an NES controller that plays like a flute and makes 8-bit sounds. There really is a shit load of instruments in this game, and you can intuitively control each of them. You’ve got control over whether you’re playing chords or arpeggios, and the pitch and rhythm. Want to take <st1 :place w:st="on"></st1><st1 :placename w:st="on">Swan</st1> <st1 :placetype w:st="on">Lake</st1> and turn it into a huge rock tune? Go for it. Want to do a traditional, sparse Japanese arrangement of The Locomotion? Give ‘er buddy! It’s really a lot of fun coming up with your own spins on things.

<o :p> </o>

My favorites that I’ve come up with so far:

- a stringed instrument version of <st1 :place w:st="on"></st1><st1 :placename w:st="on">Swan</st1> <st1 :placetype w:st="on">Lake</st1> that features Steve Vai-like ukulele solos

- a big rock version of Every Breath You Take with a driving distorted guitar and extremely thick bassline (even moreso than the original)

- a (bordering on) psychedelic version of the <st1 :place w:st="on"></st1><st1 :placename w:st="on">Mute</st1> <st1 :placetype w:st="on">City</st1> theme from F-Zero

<o :p> </o>

There’s also a wide variety of mini-games and lessons that that add at to the experience. Another big plus- using the Wii Fit Balance Board you can basically replicate a full drum kit, using the board for the foot pedals. It’s not completely intuitive (you have to press different buttons on the Wii-mote and nunchuck for snare, tom or cymbals), but it’s pretty damn fun once you get the hang of it.

<o :p> </o>

The big downfall of Wii Music is the song selection, which ranges from the juvenile to the public domain for the most part. For your average music fan, songs like Do-Re-Mi will do little to interest them. Which is a shame, because half the fun is taking something you don’t like, or would never listen to, and cultivating it into something that you would like. There’s also a handful of songs from video games (like Zelda, Super Mario, Wii Sports and the aforementioned F-Zero). These are possibly the most fun songs to play; there’s just not enough of them.

<o :p> </o>

Still, as a creative game, totally separate from just a rhythm game like Guitar Hero or Rock Band, Wii Music is a blast. I hope we get a sequel at some point with more songs, particularly more contemporary ones, and even more instruments.

<o :p> </o>

Misses-

<o :p> </o>

Legends of Wrestlemania – Nothing can sum this up better than a one sentence review from Somethingawful.com. “Remember that great moment at Wrestlemania III where Hulk Hogan was prompted to press the X button, but accidentally pressed the Y button and Andre The Giant took the advantage?” This game suffers from too many of what’s called “real time” onscreen prompts. These are a reasonable gameplay element and they work out well enough in games like Resident Evil 4 or the aforementioned Madworld. Don’t ask me why, but it just doesn’t work for a wrestling game. The nostalgia here is great. But it’s a rental, not a purchase.

Hey there kids! Welcome back to the blitz. It sure has been a while. We’ll, during a down period at work, I put together an incredibly lengthy review of virtually all media that I’ve absorbed since we last spoke. I’ll be doling them out every couple of days. So keep yer stinkin’ eyes glued here, a’ight? I know that, much like the megaphone crooners of old, you just can’t wait to see what I have to say about things.

Anyway, I e-mailed myself the file from work, but didn’t count on it being such a long time before I posted the first review. So, I’m going to whip one up for you here in real time about various musicians that I know who’ve put together some pretty damn good albums in the last little while. Links included where possible.

Jane Ehrhardt- Songs from the Trajectory

For years, I didn’t even know Jane was a musician. I believe, if I recall correctly, that she was a member of the fondly remembered Fuzz, an all girl rock band from Riverview. I figured, however, that like so many good high school musicians, she had just given it up for a career and raising a family or whatever. Of course, only knowing her peripherally for years probably accounted for that. Anyway, when I ran into her at a New Year’s Party last year and heard she was still performing, I was interested to hear.

So, I looked her up on CBC Radio 3 and was pleased to find a nice, folkey, sort of alt-country sound. The songs themselves were well crafted (I particularly liked Join The Circus, the opening track to her first album, The Airs of my Heart), and her voice was great. Then, a couple of weeks ago, I caught her performance with Bette & Wallet in Moncton. The tour package (Jane and B&W each join the backing band of the other for their performances) put on a really good show, and Jane’s voice carries very well in a room like Moncton’s Manhattan. Jane’s new songs were really good, and that same indie-folk-country vibe was there ringing off the walls. On a purely superficial note, I have to say it certainly doesn’t hurt that Jane and Mary-Beth Carty of Bette & Wallet are both stone cold foxes. I’m just saying.

I gladly plunked down the cash to pick up copies of both her albums.

Then, as I drove home from the show, I popped the new CD in and a funny thing happened. Funky wah guitar started coming out of my speakers. “The hell?” Did I get a misprinted CD? Then, there was Jane’s voice. Make no mistake, if you’ve just heard her first album, or seen the current tour, Jane’s horizons expand a hell of a lot farther than you thought. The album runs the gamut from rock to country and everywhere in between. It’s catchy as hell and songwriting is very well developed. I can’t wait to see what Jane comes up with next.

Jane and Bette & Wallet are still on tour through Nova Scotia and Quebec for the next couple of weeks, check them out if you get a chance.

The Peter Parkers - We Were All Born on a Burial Ground

The Parkers, perhaps the most well known act in this particular article, have finally followed up one of my personaly favorite albums This is Sity Music. I’ll forgoe the personal stories and just tell you that I’ve been a fan of this band before I got to know most of the members and I still think they’re the best live act in Canada these days. The Parkers specialize in, by their own description, “evil rock vs. slow love making music.” To paraphrase a friend of mine, half the hairs in your ear will seizure, the other half will orgasm. They are an ear-bleedingly beautiful band.

If there’s one complaint that can be levied against We Were All Born on a Burial Ground, it’s more of the same. The sound of the band hasn’t evolved significantly since their last album. What has evolved though is their songwriting. Songs like Nod if you Can Hear, and To Thomas I Will Write are still presented in the same dynamic way that their older songs were, but the songs themselves are just wonderful. Dare I say it, there seems to be a certain maturity to the songwriting that may not have been there before. The band still rock with reckless abandon, but it seems to be more purposeful.

As it stands, this CD is in very high rotation in my car and, I expect, will stay there for quite some time.

Thee Requiems - s/t

It’s completely impossible for me to remain unbiased about a band where I used to be in bands with three of the four members. Nonetheless, I’ll make efforts. Thee Requiems is a great rock record. For a very loose (as opposed to sloppy) band, the production values on this album are pitch perfect. It’s noisy when it needs to be (Slow Man’s Fast Food) and etherial when it requires (The More You Take Away). The production seems well suited to each song.

Tracks like Mary Toft, Like A Heart Attack, Fashion and Eat Some Worms (which earned me a “thank you” in the liner notes as its an old Catboxer song) are great, and hint at even better potential. It’ll be very interesting to see where this band is in a couple of years. If they continue to develop, I very much look forward to a follow up album.

Well, that’s all for now kids. Or is it? Ok, this is the last bit. Enjoy a glimpse at the GREATEST ACTION HERO OF ALL TIME. He’s a real doctor!

It’s true. You know this already.

<o> </o>

I mean what the hell is it? Impossible to describe properly, too much covered by the word. Too many things it could mean; too many ways it can be used.

<o> </o>

I approach this topic with heavy thoughts in my head, as I recently heard a good friend and his wife are planning to divorce. She moved to this country with him, and she hasn’t been able to adjust properly to life here. I don’t know the details, but I imagine that the cultural differences were too staggering. The loneliness, the distance from home, the perception of isolation (real or imagined, the effect is the same).

<o> </o>

As far as I know, they love each other. But she can’t live here, and he can’t get a good enough job there. That’s tough. There’s no good way for it to happen. It’s one thing if love isn’t there, or if something happens that changes the way people feel. At least then you can say to yourself that you weren’t meant for each other. It’s arguably easier to move on when you know with certainty that it wouldn’t have worked out.

<o> </o>

It might be harder when the problem is circumstances. You can get caught in a spiral of thoughts. Was it just the wrong time? If we’d met a year earlier or a year later would it have worked out? Is there anything I could still do? Did I try hard enough? Did I try too hard? Too many questions and none of them with answers, or if there is an answer, it’s not a good one.

<o> </o>

Love often just seems co-opted as a way to sell greeting cards. I’m sure everyone’s been depressed and alone on a Valentine’s Day. When you get caught on the dark side of love – the pain – these things seem particularly like a slap in the face. Something that used to make you feel so good is now just poison. Sometimes the highs are better than the lows. Sometimes it’s the other way around. Maybe the best you can hope is to even out.

<o> </o>

What’s weird is I’m in a pretty good place these days romantically. Real sweet girl, we have a great time together. But hearing about something like this, I start remembering all the hurt I’ve had. It’s strange looking back on hurt from the place I’m in now. It doesn’t seem real in hindsight. I guess that’s a positive thing. It’s just a shame that when you go through the rollercoaster, sometimes remembering the good times is painful. Other times you might just not be able to remember it.

<o> </o>

I guess it’s just life. Ups and downs. The yo-yo, so to speak. Perspective is tough sometimes, but always needed. It’s a dark tunnel sometimes, but there’s light. When it’s bright, watch the shadows. Balance.

<o> </o>

If he reads this, you’ll make it through friend. It will get better.

<o :p> </o>

Most improved wrestler- The Miz

<o :p></o>Two years ago when he debuted, Mike The Miz was my least favorite part of Smackdown. Slowly, he grew on me, and was a runner up to last year’s most improved wrestler, his tag partner John Morrison. What’s shocking is that Miz has gotten even better in the year since. His ring work is crisp, his mic work is stellar, he gets great heat from the crowd and his psychology is improving with every match. As loathe as I would have been to admit this two years ago, Miz is going to be a big part of the future of the business. He and Morrison alone have validated the entire concept of Tough Enough (the wrestling reality show from a few years back, which both competed on), retroactively.

<o :p> </o>

No cigar- The Brian Kendrick, Cody Rhodes, Matt Hardy

<o :p> </o>

Most improved wrestler (female)- Kelly Kelly

<o :p> </o>

Last years worst lady wrestler is this year’s most improved. Like Trish and Candace (who’s actually fallen back quite a bit since her injury) before her, Kelly Kelly has worked her ass off and improved dramatically in the past 365. Is she great? Not by a long shot, but who knows? Hopefully she can continue her upward momentum and not get stalled by injury like Candace.

<o :p> </o>

No cigar- Michelle McCool

<o :p> </o>

Funniest- Santino Marella

<o :p> </o>

Not much to say here except that the man is gold with a mic. Great character.

<o :p> </o>

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vzf3Hkff49I

<o :p> </o>

Best Tag Team- Miz and Morrison

<o :p> </o>

While MNM 2.0 are spectacular as a team this is mostly a reflection of the weakness of tag team wrestling these days. Teams like The Colons, Rhodes/DiBiase and Punk/Kingston were all hit or miss in 2008. The only real competition by a wide margin was TNA’s Beer Money team, who haven’t impressed me as much as some. Hopefully, with the injection of some new teams, Miz and Morrison can continue to bring more prominence to tag team wrestling.

<o :p> </o>

No cigar- Beer Money, Cryme Time

<o :p> </o>

Best Feud- Shawn Michaels vs. Chris Jericho

<o :p> </o>

Was there any doubt? For much of this summer <st1 :city w:st="on"></st1><st1 :place w:st="on">Jericho</st1> and Michaels carried Raw and made it watchable. The feud was so well developed, so personal and so intense that it surpassed all expectations. Their feud in 2003 was great. This was awesome. Perhaps the best part was how it flowed. The feud developed organically from the Michaels/Flair/Batista storyline, grew legs of its own, and the momentum eventually landed <st1 :place w:st="on"></st1><st1 :city w:st="on">Jericho</st1> the World Heavyweight Title. Then, we were treated to a fantastic swan song to this rivalry with a phenomenal ladder match. A feud that saw Michaels go head first through a TV, his wife get punched in the face and Jericho beaten to a bloody pulp en route to a world title win; the best wrestling on TV this year.

<o :p> </o>

No cigar- Edge vs. Undertaker

<o :p> </o>

Best wrestler (female)- Beth Phoenix

<o :p> </o>

Being a muscular female wrestler, Beth Phoenix draws inevitable comparisons to Chyna. That’s unfortunate, because there’s some huge differences. For one, Beth is 1,000 times the wrestler Chyna ever was. I don’t remember Chyna carrying anyone to any kind of a decent match. Beth has done an admirable job carrying many of the “skinny, model” archetype lady wrestlers. Next, in terms of mic skill and charisma, it’s no comparison. Chyna was always the most effective when she didn’t say shit. Beth, as evidenced by her interactions with Santino, is quite good with a mic. Beth’s closest competition was last year’s winner, Awesome Kong. Kong had a good year too from what I’ve heard, but it wasn’t as impressive as The Glamazon’s.

<o :p> </o>

No cigar- Awesome Kong, Mickie James

<o :p> </o>

Best wrestler (male)- Chris Jericho

<o :p> </o>

<st1 :city w:st="on"></st1><st1 :place w:st="on">Jericho</st1> was the frigging man this year. When his return in late 2007 stalled out of the blocks, many felt that maybe he shouldn’t have come back. Perhaps he would not significantly add to his legacy (which was definitely impressive beforehand, including the much lauded title of first ever Undisputed Champion, holding both the WWF and WCW World Titles at the same time). This seemed to be the case as his most impressive accomplishment in the first half of ’08 was another Intercontinental Title reign, impressive in that it was his record eigth reign, but not hugely impressive in terms of prestige. What a difference a heel turn can make. By turning heel and inserting himself in the middle of the Shawn Michaels/Batista feud, <st1 :city w:st="on"></st1><st1 :place w:st="on">Jericho</st1> started some of the best work of his career. He shed his “party host” Y2J character and became more mature. More seasoned. And most of all, more bitter. Chris Jericho circa 2008 is an incredibly bitter and resentful man.

<o :p> </o>

And you know what? He’s right. Like all the best villains (The Joker being the exception that proves the rule), Chris Jericho feels he is completely justified in all his actions and is convinced that he’s doing the right thing. The fans are hypocrites for cheering Shawn Michaels when he cheats, but booing <st1 :city w:st="on"></st1><st1 :place w:st="on">Jericho</st1> when he calls him on it. Hell, I’ve thought as much for years, all the way back to when Hogan would rake eyes and choke people with his ripped up tank top. When <st1 :city w:st="on"></st1><st1 :place w:st="on">Jericho</st1> threw Michaels face first threw a television monitor on his interview segment, it was the right thing to do. When he punched Michaels’ wife, it wasn’t his fault: it was Michaels’ fault for getting her involved in the first place.

<o :p> </o>

The best part though is the matches. After solid outings with JBL and a good showing in the Wrestlemania ladder match, <st1 :city w:st="on"></st1><st1 :place w:st="on">Jericho</st1> delivered the best matches of the year. <st1 :city w:st="on"></st1><st1 :place w:st="on">Jericho</st1> was on fire. His series with Michaels will go down as some of the best ever. My favorite may have been getting a VERY stiff beating from Michaels at Unforgiven, weaseling his way into the Championship Scramble match later in the night and winning the World Title out from under Batista’s nose. He then went on to defend the title against Michaels in an excellent ladder match, losing a tooth in the process. He traded the title with Batista in particularly good matches (particularly for Batista) before dropping it in a good match with Cena. After a year like that with two title runs and all those good matches, <st1 :city w:st="on"></st1><st1 :place w:st="on">Jericho</st1> could have an even better 2009 if he maintains his momentum. I’m picking Orton to win the Royal Rumble this weekend, but <st1 :place w:st="on"></st1><st1 :city w:st="on">Jericho</st1> has a pretty good shot too.

<o :p> </o>

No cigar- Randy Orton, Shawn Michaels, Edge

<o :p> </o>

As for the negative side of things, I’ll just throw down a few paragraph. Candace Michelle and Chris “Braden Walker” Harris, based on disappointment alone would be good picks for worst wrestlers of the year. Michelle seemed to be getting better all the time in 2007, she hasn’t been able to get it together since coming back. Weight gain seemed to cause Harris to have terrible matches and an abysmal run in the WWE.

<o :p> </o>

I can’t recall a specific worst match to the year, but there were certainly some stinkers throughout. Worst idea was probably Vince’s “Million $ Mania” which cost him money, made him look silly and old on TV (not the character, mind you, but Vince himself), and it’s only pay off, another hokey death/near death experience, has apparently been left unresolved.

<o :p> </o>

Let’s see how my predictions from last year fared-

<o :p> </o>

-Jeff Hardy will win the world title and will keep the title warm before dropping it back to Orton who will drop it to a returning Cena

I think I should at least get ¾ of point for this one. Hardy did win a world title, and the Cena scenario I laid out did happen, but it was Batista dropping the title to <st1 :city w:st="on"></st1><st1 :place w:st="on">Jericho</st1> who lost it to Cena.

<o :p> </o>

-Cena’s “unstoppable good guy” thing will finally get stale enough that he’ll turn into a devious evil bastard

Still waiting on this, though to be fair, time away made Cena seem slightly less stale

<o :p> </o>

-Kennedy will regain his momentum, and will be a world champion by 2009

Kennedy seemed to be doing alright before going out with another injury. Maybe he’ll get things going this year. I like him, but he’s injury prone. If he can stay healthy he’s got a huge upside.

<o :p> </o>

-Ditto for Matt Hardy

<o :p> </o>

Hardy won the ECW World Title at Unforgiven. Swish!

-By mid-year, everyone will be totally sick of Hornswaggle

No, but his presence has been reduced, which was a smart move.

-By mid-year, everyone will be totally sick of handicap matches

<o :p> </o>

As near as I can remember, handicap matches have also been happening less frequently. It’s still overused, but it’s seems more bearable.

-Actually, I’m already sick of handicap matches

<o :p> </o>

If they keep up, I might be in the mood for handicap matches by 2010.

-MVP will win a world title

<o :p> </o>

Wow. Way off. MVP just got his first win in six months. Still, “it’s all part of the plan.” If they can build him back up right (which was the plan, after all) he could find himself in a better position than when he started.

-Tag Team wrestling will, sadly, continue to be neglected.

<o :p> </o>

Not for lack of lack of trying by Miz and Morrison.

-A better wrestling game for the Wii will be released.

<o :p> </o>

Yup, the new Smackdown vs Raw is apparently a huge improvement. I didn’t take any chances though, and got it for the PS2. It’s not without it’s problems, unfortunately, but that’s an article for another day. The less said about the TNA game the better.

-Candice will keep getting better.

<o :p> </o>

Nope.

-Awesome Kong will be…well…awesome.

<o :p> </o>

Seems that way, though she’s out with an injury as well, from what I hear.

-Awesome Kong and the TNA women’s division will be the highlight of the show, while Vince Russo slowly ruins whatever credibility the program may or may not have.

<o :p> </o>

Nope. Again, from what I’ve read, it seems like the women’s division doesn’t seem as sharp as it used to. I’m sure Gail Kim leaving didn’t help that at all either.

-As always, Vince McMahon will weasel out of his trouble with the government and in the coming years, will spin it as himself being a brave, intrepid businessman, standing up to a corrupt government. The DVD should be a hoot.

<o :p> </o>

Vince responded to a congressional hearing with some pretty suspect answers, claiming ignorance about a lot of the problems in the WWE today. Once the heat is off for a while, Vince will got back to talking about being persecuted.

<o :p> </o>

That was 2008. My predictions didn’t exactly have a stunning success rate, so I’ll forgo them for 2009 and instead go with what I hope.

<o :p> </o>

I hope Santino gets good in the ring.

I hope <st1 :city w:st="on"></st1><st1 :place w:st="on">Jericho</st1> wins a few more world titles.

I hope Christian has a hell of a run this time.

I hope Regal wins a world title. He deserves it, and he was getting nuclear crowd reactions during his run as King.

I hope the Candace gets better again.

I hope no one “pulls a Benoit.”

That IS a Costanza reference if you’re wondering…

So I’ve been gone for a while, partially because I forgot my username and password, but also because I bought a Playstation 2. I got my wisdom teeth out and decided to get a used one to entertain myself for a few days, not knowing that by buying GTA San Andreas I was committing myself to 60+ hours of playing time to complete it 100%. I feel a lot like Jim Gaffigan, renting “Heat” for the first time and not being able to discuss it with any of his friends who saw it 15 years earlier. I’m a loser, I know, but I have no plans to buy a PS3 or GTA IV.

I don’t really have much to say about it, and I honestly never had sex with a hooker and then killed her to get my money back… I just liked to do the missions and fly helicopters around. I love the people that talk about that one thing that you can do in the game and use it as an excuse to say that the game is evil and immoral but who have absolutely no idea what else the game entails. They have no idea how complex the plot is or how star-studded the cast of characters is. At least in GTA you can choose whether or not to kill and rob people, try yelling at the TV the next time you rent “Goodfellas” and see if they will decide to drive a cab around or be a paramedic instead. If you want to hate GTA, hate it because it completely engulfs your life and turns you into a good-for-nothing lump on the couch. It’s digitized crack.

That’s not what I came back to talk about, though. I came back to talk about Bud Light. More specifically, “Drinkability.” I don’t know if you guys have these commercials in Canada, but if you don’t you’re lucky. I can’t even begin to describe how much they piss me off. And what’s worse? No one is doing anything about it. I would KILL to be an advertising executive for Coors or Miller so that I could UNLOAD on budweiser on a national stage. Admittedly, Coors is too busy making an incredibly annoying series of fake press conference commercials themselves, but I would love to see Miller come out with a new ad campaign. I can see it now: “The ‘potablitude’ of Miller light is far superior to the ‘drinkability’ of Bud Light due to ‘ingestation enhancers’ and an infusion of ‘gulposity.’ It’s fun to make up words, but we recommend investing in a decent tasting beer before spending all your money on an ad campaign.”

The Mac people already busted on PC’s for spending more money on their commercials than on fixing Vista, so the work is already done. Beer advertisers don’t even have to be original, just kind of be dicks. It’s not hard…. GRRRRRR.

BTW, I found this youtube video while I was looking for the Mac/PC commercial. Gave me a chuckle…

Obviously the headline is a joke, get over it.

You can call me a cynic all you want, but I’ll refrain from dancing naked in the street over Barack Obama being elected President for now. I’ve read a lot of people talking about how this is a huge moment for “change” and “hope.” On the other end of things, somebody compared him to Hitler, which generally means you’ve lost the argument. Needless to say, people’s opinions are extreme. Here’s a great collection of some angry, right-wing responses.

The Something Awful Forum goons share “anti-Obama rants”

Anyway, a number of people have asked me (my mother, loudest of all) why I don’t believe in Barack Obama. I answer simply “he’s a politician,” and then high-five my fellow cynics. He seems like a good guy, and his policies sound like a step in the right direction. Fair enough. Problem is, for all the other bullshit that came out of their mouths, the Republicans did have one very valid point: he has no experience. Obama may not be prepared to play politics on the grandest stage.

And, to be totally fair, I know that he seems like the light at the end of a long dark tunnel (ironically, when you think about it), but even John McCain would have been a hell of a step up from Bush. Christ, some would argue that a pet rock would be a step up from Bush. Of course, in what I can only assume was a misguided attempt to gain the feminist vote or something, McCain shot himself in the foot by aligning himself with “Hotlips” Palin. John McCain basically gift wrapped the sexist vote for Obama. Then she started talking and it was all downhill from there.

My point is that Barack Obama’s ticket was the least objectionable option. That doesn’t make him Philosopher King. He’s a politician and a man. Some people are talking about him like he’s a saviour sent from on high. Why don’t see what he can do before we all line up to pay homage, eh?

I don’t want to say that I expect him to screw it up. To ignore that possibility, however, is incredibly short sighted. US Pres is generally accepted to be one of the hardest jobs in the world. There’s pressure being put on you from all directions. Hell, look at how many people have screwed it up. No matter how strong Obama’s (and many other’s) desire for change is, there are very powerful forces who will fight change tooth and nail. I’m sure some are hard line capitalists: super-rich who wouldn’t be able to handle becoming just rich. Paradoxically, they garner the support of many people in much lower tax brackets who’s only concern is being able to keep their guns, or keeping gay people from marrying each other. Obviously, these are generalizations, but you can’t ignore that those elements are out there.

Barack Obama could be a great president. There’s potential there. Will it all come together for him? I’m not sure. Some very idealistic politicians have been chewed up and spit out by the system. We’ll see how he fairs.

I wish him all the luck in the world. He’s going to need it.

Not in the same way as American politics, mind you. But every single candidate, commentator, pundit and campaign manager made a complete ass of themselves at one time or another. We’d be here all week if I tried to name them all, so here’s some of the highlights.

Pundits-

Steve Murphy, of Atlantic Canada’s Live at Five News managed to make himself look like a complete arse in the lead up to the election. When asking a question to Liberal candidate Stephane Dion, he used such irregular verb tense that even people with English as a first language didn’t know what the christ he was getting at. It was something like this: “What, if you had been in Stephen Harper’s position, would you have done, if then faced with the same issues he had been faced with anywise, at that time, had you been in his position?”I doubt you can find a tense for that in a Bescherelle (little green French verb text that I’m sure folks in French Immersion remember). Dion, if candidates were truly allowed to speak their minds, probably would have answered by calling Murphy “un petit salope incompitent.”Two outcomes to this. One, it probably made some people question Dion’s communication skills. Two, for anyone who understands the journlistic process, it made Murphy (or at least his producers who were certainly in his earpiece) look like manipulative douchebags, who were out to make Dion look bad.

Well, that notwithstanding, he’s still better than that intolerable Bruce Frisko.

Next up is Mike Duffy, who has now cemented for himself the position of “Canada’s Rush Limbaugh,” and not just for physical appearance. In a segment talking to both Green Party Leader Elizabeth May and Peter McKay (the incumbant in the riding May was running), May made comments about renegotiating the NAFTA agreement. Duffy called her comments “bizarre” and “off the wall,” then rather than ask McKay to respond, he asks him this question:

“How do you debate someone who is never going to be in power and can promise the world and never have to back it up?”

You know, I’ve always thought that Mike Duffy was just a fat, blackhole of charisma. Now, I can see clearly that he’s just a hack. No journalist or pundit with any self-respect would dismiss any political candidate’s chances so tactlessly. Particularly when said candidate is on live satellite hook up with you at that very moment, you tremendous douchebag!

We know the Green Party isn’t going to get elected. I know that, you know that, hell, I’m sure Elizabeth May admits as much to herself. But that’s hardly relevant, is it? Does that make her point less valid? The NDP will never get elected either, but they don’t need to win the election. They just need some seats so they can continue to fight for change on some level. And the Green Party is the same way. There may well never be an NDP Prime Minister (and there will almost certainly never be a Green Party Prime Minister), but you know what Duffy? It was NDP guys who introduced the health care that’s keeping your fat ass alive today. Think about that when you’re recovering from your next heart attack.

I’ll bet he was trying to get her to freak out and prove herself to be a typical, PMSey, unreliable candidate. Instead, in very plain and polite language, Elizabeth May told Mike Duffy he had just lost any integrity he ever had. I’m sure she wanted to tell him to go fuck himself, but as May knows (and apparently Duffy doesn’t) that “The Mike Duffy Show” is not the forum for partisan, personal attacks. This is. So, on behalf of anyone who respects the journalistic process and the spirit of debate, I’m proud to say, “Mike Duffy, just go fuck yourself.”

Of course, on the other hand, I’m none too pleased with the Green Party either. This isn’t an issue of policy, this is an issue of technique. The Green Party is supposed to be an alternative. Not the same as the other candidates. But, it seems odd to me that the Green Party were the only party who completely filled the hallways of my apartment building with their paper flyers. Ideologically, should they even be using paper? Then, it gets worse, as the NDP had, without question, the most wasteful use of signage of any party in my view. On a stretch of highway in Moncton, I saw 16 Green Party signs, all packed into one small 10 meter stretch of grass. Here in Fredericton, there was a huge Green campaign sign, with two smaller ones flanking it. If you have a sign that huge, is there any need at all for two smaller ones that you can’t clearly read from the road anyway? There’s a word for that: wasteful. I would be miffed at this if it were any other party, but for the Green Party, this just seems so hypocritical and tactless.

The effects were seen today, as I was waiting at an intersection and a couple of loose Green Party signs got caught in the wind and blew across the road. It was like a politically irresponsible version of the bag in the wind scene in American Beauty.

Anyway, the logical way to end this article would be to talk about the prospect of four more years of Mr. Harper, but I would run out of energy long before I made my point. So, I’ll leave that one for another day.

This was a pretty good week for video games, as far as I’m concerned. I picked up two new titles that I was very pleased with. Interestingly, the two games are on totally opposite sides of the spectrum. Let’s begin with…

Lego Batman for the Wii

If you played the previous Lego offerings for Star Wars or Indiana Jones, you know what you’re getting into here. Lego Batman’s gameplay follows the exact same formula of simple brick smashing and puzzle solving, but I suppose that’s par for the course. The Lego games are targeted to Lego’s primary audience: kids. This is a pretty easy game. Cross promoting with franchises like Batman and Indiana Jones widens the audience though. What they’re really successful with, as was the case with Lego Star Wars (thought not quite as well with Indiana Jones), is capturing the mood and feel of the original material, through the Lego lens.

Play as The Riddler and confuse the shit out of your opponents!

The cut-scenes, for example, are entertaining in a cute Lego way, but have a humour that plays up the Batman mythos. A few times, after a boss is defeated, Batman will decipher a clue or free a hostage while Robin ends up in a slapstick struggle with the defeated boss. Without taking his attention off what he’s doing at all, Batman will blindly throw a batarang that will loop around perfectly, knock out the villain and, and return perfectly to his hand. It’s a send up of a lot of the moments you see in the comics and the various movies and animated programs. I call them “He’s Batman” moments, where he does something so spectacular the only possible explanation is the fact that he’s Batman. Or as he would put it, if you asked him about it, “I’m Batman.” Another touch I laughed at was having Killer Moth (who’s a lame joke of a character anyway) playing comic relief. While Joker is explaining his grand plan, Moth keeps starting at the light in the room, mesmerized, until Scarecrow smacks him in the back of the head.

Another great touch is the references to the Tim Burton Batman films. The soundtrack is taken entirely from the 1989 film, which adds tremendously to the atmosphere. Levels take place in the art museum, and the cathedral tower, and The Joker’s face even reminds me a little of Nicholson’s Joker. While I’ve made it no secret that I enjoy the Nolan series of Bat-films more, the Burton films are a much better fit for the Lego treatment. That being said, as much as I liked having “tropical” Joker (as in the scene from The Killing joke where he cripples Barbara Gordon) as an unlockable character, it would have been great to have a Ledger-style Joker in there, not to mention a Dark Knight style Batman.

“You ever dance with the Lego Devil in the pale moonlight?”

The one big difference between this game and the previous entries is that the lack of a previously established storyline. There are some heavy allusions to the first series of Batman films, mostly through the distribution of teams throughout the chapters. Riddler and Two-Face (Batman Forever) are on a team with Mr. Freeze and Poison Ivy (Batman & Robin), and Catwoman and Penguin (Batman Returns) team up on another, though thankfully, Penguin is not the mutant Tim Burton version. Regardless, not being tied to the plot of a series of films, they changed the layout of how the game is played. When you start, you can choose to begin the first level of either of the three Hero chapters, in which you battle five (wo)man villain teams over five levels. You access the chapters from the central hub of the Batcave, which functions the same way as the Cantina or the Museum in the previous games. Once you beat a chapter, however, you can jump over to Arkham Asylum and access the villain missions from there. Villain missions follow the same story as the Hero missions, but from the opposite point of view. Thankfully, this takes us through different routes and paths around the same landmarks in the Hero missions, rather than simply playing Hero missions with villains. This adds a fun duality to the game, and the atmosphere and look of both the Batcave and Arkham Asylum are great. In Arkham, along with the villains you’ve unlocked, dozens of Joker, Penguin and Mr. Freeze’s thugs wander the halls, starting fights and raising hell.

The villains are a lot of fun to play with. Joker is my favorite right now, as he has the best gun, an immunity to toxins, and a great joy buzzer grapple move. Actually, the toxin immunity is pretty funny, as any character with chemicals involved in their origin at all has it. I can understand Poison Ivy, Clayface and even, to a certain extent The Joker, but I have no idea why Two-Face or Bane are immune to toxic waste. Regardless, while this game has a much smaller roster than it’s predecessors, I find it’s more focused this time around. The characters that are there are more useful. Riddler and Mad Hatter both use mind control on lesser NPCs, Catwoman and Harley Quinn are both great jumpers, in their own ways. Ivy can grow plants and Joker can power some machines with the joy buzzer. Killer Moth and Man Bat have distinctly different flying styles. My favorite might have been Bane’s grapples which include the iconic Bat-breaker move, which actually breaks the Lego victim into pieces (and harkens back to Chewbacca’s arm rip off move in the Star Wars games).

Overall, while not posing much of a challenge (though the “collect and unlock” nature of the game adds to replayability), I find it’s a pretty solid game. If you liked the previous Lego games, you like this. If you like Batman, you’ll probably enjoy it as well. If you like one and not the other, well, you’ve got a fifty-fifty chance. Two-Face would like those odds.

The other game I got this week is the complete opposite in a lot of fundamental ways…

Mega Man 9 for the Wii

This frigging thing caused me no end of frustration. While the spinning column of flowers threatens to knock you into insta-kill spikes, that little flower pecker pops up. I’m not certain, but I think the number of petals he shoots at you corresponds with what clock position he pops up at (i.e. 3 petals if he’s shooting from 3 o’clock).

While certainly doing a fine job with graphic overhauls on their older games (the remade Mega Man, Ghouls n’ Ghosts and the, apparently awesome, Bionic Commando Rearmed) Capcom took a different approach with this one. Available as a Wiiware/PSN/Xbox Live Arcade downloadable title, Mega Man 9 is as old-school as it gets. Sporting 8-bit graphics and sound, Mega Man 9 will bring you in for nostalgia, but you’ll stay for the gameplay.

Hardhats, or Mets as they’re more properly called, return to their roots here. Previous games saw flying Mets, swimming Mets, giant Mets and even Mets who drove trucks. These simple triple-shot Mets a generally strategically placed to be the biggest pain in the ass possible. Note the flying saucers at the top of the screen, which are also trying to kill you.

To be blunt, this is the hardest goddamn game I’ve played in a long, long time. And I’ve been spoiling for a good challenge. By doing away with graphical concerns, Capcom poured all their efforts into level design and A.I. behaviour. In Plug Man’s level, there’s a spot of classic “disappearing and reappearing” blocks over a bed of spikes, with a hard hat shooter guy waiting on the platform you’re trying to jump on. 10 lives later, I finally found where to land and when to shoot to be able to land safely. In Jewel Man’s level, there are large cannons that can take off about a fifth of your energy with one shot and aim directly for you. While you’re trying to deal with that, a little green pod flutters to the ground. Upon landing, is sprouts spikes and turns into a fast moving, whirling hazard that moves just below your line of fire. After a couple of retries, you start to get the pattern of when to shoot the green thing before it hits, in between the cannon’s shots. Mega Man 9 is a study in mastering thousands of little situations like that.

Striking a blow for robotic women’s rights, Splash Woman is the first female Robot Master (boss) to be introduced in the series. I finally kicked her ass and took her Lightning Trident earlier tonight. Back to the kitchen, hussy!

In keeping with the retro feeling, the slide (introduced in Mega Man 3) and the charged shots (introduced in Mega Man 4) are done away with. You can jump and you can shoot, that’s it. And that’s all you need. I remember borrowing Mega Man 6, the last NES entry, shortly after its release and beating it in one evening. While my gaming efforts were certainly divided this week, I only managed to beat two bosses on the first night of playing. Yesterday I picked off one, and I beat two more tonight. The difficulty really makes you appreciate when victory comes. I’ve only actually beaten one of the bosses with the right weapon so far, I’m looking forward to discovering The Pattern.

This mosaic shows all the bosses from the first 6 games. This will make a snazzy desktop photo/”name the robot trivia game” for drunken geeks.

The Pattern is a tie that binds all the Mega Man and Mega Man X games together. Beat a boss and you get their weapon. The weapon generally, will be the achilles heel of another boss, but figuring out which one is another part of the challenge. So, you develop an order to fight the levels in. For example, here’s my order for Mega Man 2- Air Man, Metal Man, Bubble Man, Flash Man, Crash Man, Wood Man, Heat Man, Quick Man. Everyone can develop their own plan. My first objective is to get Metal Man’s metal blades, which are the most useful weapon in the game as you can throw them in 8 directions. That’s a big help in some levels like Crash Man’s. I’ll fight Air Man first, though, so that I can have the rocket sled when I play Metal Man’s level and can reach an energy tank. These are the kind of considerations and strategy you can apply to the games. I’m still trying to figure out my strategy for Mega Man 9. And I love that, I haven’t really had to develop a strategy for a game in a long time.

A nerd’s wet dream, here’s a picture of all the original series and directly related Mega Man games. The original series (the six NES games, plus the five Gameboy, one SNES game and a PS1 game) are set about a century before the Mega Man X series (three SNES, three PS1, two PS2), which were followed by the Mega Man Z and ZX series on Gameboy Advance and DS. One of Z and ZX is a prequel series, I think, but I’m not sure which.

I should also mention the sound. The music is 8-bits, and kicks ass. Capcom has always been known for having great music in their games, from Mega Man to Street Fighter and everywhere in between. They deliver perfectly here. Tornado Man’s level music ranks up there with the best Mega Man songs in my opinion. It just gets you really pumped up for the level.

So, to sum up two great games, for entirely different reasons. Lego Batman, you shouldn’t have to guess whether or not you’ll like it. You should be able to tell from your enjoyment of either Batman or the other Lego games. Mega Man 9, I recommend to everyone, particularly younger gamers. Give this a go, and take a look at how effective simplicity can be. Instead of having a hundred buttons and complicated command sequences you’ve got two buttons and one helluva challenge. Back in the days before a game could really hang its hat on things like graphics and cut scenes, the bottom line was gameplay and challenge. Mega Man 9 exceeds my expectations for both.

I figure this is as close as this site will come to a 9/11 retrospective. One of the best parts of that is an excuse to post that great Tetris gif. Ah, what the hell, here’s this one too.

I digress.
From my view, it seems like every year there’s slightly fewer little stories in the various media about where people were, and what they were doing on 9/11, and what the long term repercussions have been. As horrific as it might have been at the time, people don’t dwell on it as much as they used to.

The proof is in the pudding. The “bring up 9/11 as a justification/brag about how you handled it” technique that got Bush re-elected didn’t work the same magic for Rudy Giuliani. Maybe people are a little more savy this time around, having recognized bullshit when they see it. Nah, that’s probably not it. They’re probably swept up in Obamamania. Or McCain Fever. Or are recovering Clintonites.

Back to the topic at hand, however, I’ve read a lot of different articles in years since that painted a picture, without outright stating it, that the United States was kind of becoming a place where you wanted to be careful before speaking your mind. Maybe if you had a dark thought about politics, some sort of filthy, pinko idea about better ways to do things, you’d keep it to yourself. Nobody wants to hear that. It’s un-American.

I wouldn’t know. I don’t live in the States, and there’s entirely too much conjecture about America and its people by folks who don’t live there, and may have never even visited there. Honestly, it’s something a lot of Canadians are guilty of. And probably a lot of people in other places in the world.

Regardless of whether America has an undertone of repression these days or not, I was sent this article this week. It’s all people admitting things they’ve thought about 9/11 that they wouldn’t say in public. Sprinkled in there, there’s also some well known quotes from shortly after 9/11 that seem really out there in hindsight.

“We should invade their countries, kill their leaders and convert them to Christianity” –Ann Coulter, in a Sept. 14, 2001, column that focused on the death of Barbara Olson, wife of the U.S. solicitor general, Ted Olson

It’s really interesting, funny and sad. Here’s the link for the comments that were posted after the article, which are just as interesting. A few of my favorites-

“And really, what’s all this shit about the fireman being heroes? That’s their job, to be heroes. That’s why they signed up. Once a month you go run into a burning building and grab a cat and the rest of the time you sit in the firehouse and play cards.

“I used to think all firemen were hot. I now think they are slimy. At least four times last October I was in a bar where a fireman was so forward and sleazy, saying things like ‘It’s been so hard. You can’t believe it’ while pawing me. I’m sure his buddy who died running into a building on fire would feel vindicated by this slimeball getting laid, but I’m not going to participate.” –Anne, 31, an advertising sales manager in New York

There’s always been a joke among African-Americans about black folks and white folks during a disaster. My father was quick to point out a black woman who had managed to get out of the towers when she was actually on a floor above where the plane hit and she was still trying to get out of downtown when the reporter stopped her.

The fact that tons of white people just stood there near the towers looking before they fell cracked him up. It confirmed the stereotype of white folks never thinking anything is ever going to happen to them. And since black people are used to fucked-up crap happening to them all the time they were trying to get the hell out of there.

Of course I spotted a few African-Americans looking lost. My dad just said that they’ve been around white people too damn long. Real black folks run.– Name withheld

During the whole awful day, I was kind of excited that something had finally happened for MY generation so I didn’t have to listen to my grandparents bitch about Pearl Harbor endlessly and ask why doesn’t my generation get some direction.– Todd VanDerWerff

My husband and I were playing Jenga afterward. When the Jenga collapsed, I shouted “North Tower.” Then the second round of the game, we shouted, “South Tower.” Now we don’t call it Jenga anymore. We call it North Tower.– Marisa

1- Fatigue from an intensified workload.
2- Efforts in toilet training the cat, which has resulted in, amongst other things, poop in the bathtub on two non-consecutive occasions.
3- Finally beating Symphony of the Night.
4- Playing various combinations of We Love Katamari and volumes 1 and 2 of the Capcom Classics Collection.
5- Working to get a band off the ground. Anyone in the general Fredericton area who drums or plays bass or sings who likes weird alternative-ish music, feel free to leave a comment. We’re looking to grow our army.

My sixth excuse is perhaps the most important, which is that I’ve started writing a script for a graphic novel. I’ll keep the details close to the chest for now, but I expect it will be a very long term project. It’s something that I’ve sort of been researching for the past 12 years, in a roundabout way.

I’ll let you know more as things develop.

I try to avoid writing about superfluous celebrity gossip and rumours and such, but this one has has had me befuddled for a while. Who the fuck is Amy Winehouse, and why is there so much coverage of her?

Alright, you got me. Im being a little facetious. I know who she is. Shes a singer. You know how I know that? Because the news reports of her being a drug addict show up under the music section of 411mania, a site I’ve frequented recently. But I guess my more specific question is why does anyone care?

Ive never heard any of her songs (that I know of), Ive never seen anyone talk about how they enjoy her music, hell, Ive never heard anyone outside of a tabloid newspaper or internet “news” site even mention her name. Purportedly, shes a musician of some sort, but I have never heard a word spoken about that. All Ive ever heard is that shes a human train wreck. Let me take a moment for some “research” here (when you’re just looking on Wikipedia, you have to put research in quotation marks).

So she won an assload of Grammies in 2006 and had a fair degree of critical acclaim. Critical acclaim dont mean shit though, as the cast of Arrested Development will tell you. I know that I didnt have a frigging clue who she was in 2006. Oh wait, shes the chick who did that Rehab song. I think I remember that. She didn’t want to go. Well that puts a different spin on this doesnt it? (Or for those who knew the Rehab song first, vice-versa)

Her manager is blaming fame for her drug addictions. Shouldnt that be out of bounds for a celebrity whose major hit was about her not wanting to go to rehab? Is anyone supposed to feel sorry for someone whose whole gimmick and persona is based on being an addict? If she sat down for a Barbara Walters interview, would she tearfully confess that I only wanted to be a junkie up to a certain point, I didn’t want to be this addicted, this go way out of control? Its tantamount to Tommy Chong blaming pot for his career dwindling. Not a chance. Chong is smart enough to know that if it wasnt for pot (either his use, or that of his audience) he wouldnt have any career at all left. He knows which side of his bread is (bud) buttered.

Now obviously, there are always more sides to a story, and an angle of heartless music executives exploiting her notoriety at the expense of her health for profit is certainly tempting. But thats ignoring personal responsibility. Unless a record executive tied her up and forced her to smoke crack, I dont buy that as any sort of excuse.

Lets remember, this isnt like your typical rise and fall story, where Elvis gets addicted to drugs and slowly his handsome charm transforms into bloated death. This is a girl who got famous for being, to steal a great turn of phrase, a drunk with a singing problem. I fail to see the tragedy here. She’s doing exactly what she seemed to set out to do.

In the meantime, the funniest thing is on that 411mania link, theres a further link for more on Amy Winehouse, and none of the stories that show up have anything at all to do with music. Its all just personal drama. Its to the point where I wonder if any of it is real.

Is it all just staged to get people hooked into her personal dramas, so that when she finally puts her life back together people will rise up and congratulate her with a thundering ovation of free publicity (and pursuant comeback album buys)? Did a British record exec get wind of the shitstorm of tabloid coverage (read: free publicity) given to the public breakdowns of Britney Spears and whoever else, and decide to manufacture that for themselves? For that matter, is all of the Britney Spears bullshit a failed early attempt at this sort of manufactured public drama (if it is a fix, it qualifies as a failure)? So, I restate the question, who the hell is Amy Winehouse?

Christ almighty. I’d also read that Spears story when it was on 411mania. Note to self: stay away from everything but the wrestling, video games and politics sections on 411. Speaking of video games…

It’s been joked about for years but it’s true, nobody does a better job of making the same games over and over again than Capcom. I want it made clear though, that I’m not complaining. I just tried out Mega Man Powered Up recently, and it’s pretty kickass. It’s an updated version of the first NES Mega Man game, with a few new bosses, an updated style, different levels, and to the pleasure of some, an adjustable difficulty level. Of course, if you’re a sadist like me, they also have a version that’s the original game but only the graphics are updated; it’s still one of the hardest games of all time.

As I said before, between the Mega Man and Street Fighter games, it’s pretty clear that Capcom loves to update old games. And around the same time as MMPU came out, a similar update of Ghosts n’ Goblins came out (also on PSP). Plus they’re also doing both a 3D remake, and a 2D update of Bionic Commando. The 2D Bionic Commando looks amazing.

Based on how satisfying the gameplay on MMPU was, personally I’d love to see them remake all the classic 8-Bit Mega Man games into that style. Of course, I can’t mention that without mentioning Mega Man 9, which has ensured the dampness of my pants lately. But that’s for another day.

Time to take it easy!

Still went to Aikido, but was very relaxed. We practiced posture, unbendable arm, and some more static techniques that don’t require a lot of motion. But I can’t find any pictures or videos of the related activities.

Perhaps I should take some time off and, oh, I dunno, watch batman or something. I still haven’t even gotten around to seeing Ironman yet. :/

On Friday night, Lindsay, Matt and I took in The Dark Knight. For two and a half hours, I don’t think I blinked once. Here’s my thoughts. I’ll try to avoid any gratuitous spoilers, but no promises, so SPOILERS THROUGHOUT.

I know I’m biased, but I agree with Kevin Smith. The Dark Knight is the greatest superhero movie ever made. Without question. The movie is a sprawling epic with twists and turns galore, multiple themes and motifs cross over each other. The concept of a white knight (Harvey Dent), and a black knight (Batman). Order and chaos (Batman and the Joker). Faith lost and faith renewed or rewarded (Gordon and Lucius Fox). There’s a lot going on with this movie. The story is dense, but not overwhelmingly so.

A lot of little details that only occur to you later, or upon repeated viewings, add extra emotional depth. Harvey Dent and Batman each think the other is the most important symbol of hope for the people of Gotham. That difference costs them much in the long run. Late in the film, a truly grotesque Two-Face screams at Batman and Gordon that he was the only one who lost anything. But Dent was Batman’s hope to someday end his mission against crime, and by this point of the film, Batman has lost as much as anyone. The best part about this is, he doesn’t say any of this, but you can read it clearly on his face, impressive considering most of his head is covered with a mask.

Dent is a classic tragic hero. He’s a good man who’s only crime at the start of the movie is an abundance of ambition. By the end of the film, that ambition costs him everything. Whether it was his arrogance (taking on the mob, one would be well aware of the potential consequences) that caused his downfall is irrelevant to Dent. Terrible things happen to Dent here, and it’s all just chance. Maybe he spent too much time “making his own luck,” and it was karma putting a thumb on the scales to balance the score. As the battle with the mob and the Joker escalates, Dent’s becomes reckless making bolder and bolder moves that all lead to his own downfall. Unlike some previous versions of Two-Face, Eckhart’s Dent clearly is a man who’s path from hero to villain is the cause of more than just monstrous facial scarring.

As expected most of the attention on “entertainment news”* programs and the internet message board community is Heath Ledger’s Joker. Believe the hype kids. Heath Ledger just disappears into the role and his performance delivers in the best possible way. In the first part of the movie, the audience laughs at The Joker’s antics, being wowed by the “pencil trick” or his various odd inflections stops laughing by the climax. As is desperately needed, by the end of the film, it doesn’t matter how showy and darkly funny he is, the audience wants to see him get what’s coming to him. The audience can’t identify with The Joker. You might be able to relate to some of the things he says (on anarchy: “when the chips are down, these people will eat each other,”), but you can’t identify with his goals. He’s not Dr. Octopus or The Green Goblin or even Harvey Dent (good men who fell from grace). He’s as close to pure evil as you can get without getting into a religious discussion.

I was expecting to be impressed with Ledger’s Joker, but even my lofty expectations were exceeded. I wasn’t expecting Ledger to outdo Mark Hamil’s voice work on the Batman animated series, but he did just that. Ledger’s very physical performance is manic and unrestrained, but just up to the line of being so out there as to loose the sinister edge. “Does Gotham really seem like a better place because of the Batman?” he asks from off camera to a Batman imitator who’s torture he’s video taping. His tone is taunting, playful even. Out of nowhere, he explodes “LOOK AT ME!” terrifying both the hockey-pad Batman and the audience. That he can run the gamut from trickster clown to psychotic killer as quickly as he does, and still be believable, is what seals the deal on Ledger’s performance, in my books. On the other end of the spectrum is the scene where the Joker, disguised as a nurse, sits down by Dent’s hospital bed, and says “Hi” with the delivery and facial expression of a high school girlfriend trying to get back a guy she had cheated on.

It’s not all roses. While Harvey Dent’s arc is beautiful and tells a wonderful story of pride going before a fall, Two-Face is almost “Venomed” if you know what I mean (though there are some members of the online community who have different ideas on this). The “Batsonar” is overused in the climax. Batman Begins’ much hated “If it gets underneath Wayne Tower, this thing is gonna blow!” guy get’s a spiritual cousin in “That’s not good!” guy. And while Maggie Gyllenhall’s turn as Rachel Dawes is way better than that of Katie Holmes, it’s still the weakest performance in the film.

These complaints are really nothing more than nitpicks, though. This is easily the best movie I’ve seen in years, and that includes Batman Begins. When people used to ask me about Batman Begins, my standard line to emphasize how good I thought the movie was always “about halfway through the movie, I realized it was already better than all the previous Batman movies put together, and he hadn’t even put on the costume on yet.” A parallel moment occurs in The Dark Knight where The Joker introduces himself to the mobs by way of the aforementioned “pencil trick,” and you immediately know that this is going to be something really special.

It looks like most people agree with me, since the movie seems to be on its way to setting a record for breaking records. Nonetheless, the movie lived up to the unbelievable hype that was applied to it (by myself, amongst others), and I am very happy with the results. It was well worth the three year wait, and I’ll gladly wait another three for one more from Nolan. As I said to Matt later on in the night after first seeing that movie, the only real problem I see with Dark Knight is that it’s about 23 hours too short.

*Entertainment News programs are neither entertaining, nor news.

Day three of Aikido started out with my first “breathing excercises,” AKA Meditation. I was interested in doing some meditationy stuff but never really got around to it before, so it was nice to be force-fed it. I have some issues kneeling for long periods though, and it’s hard for me to stay relaxed while sitting cross-legged, but it gives me something to work on.

Besides that though, meditating didn’t work at all. The particular excercise we were doing was imagining a grape-sized sphere in the middle of your being, and with every exhale it doubles in size. I started getting self conscious that my ‘being’ was starting to touch other peoples beings; then I started wondering how big doubling it would be (if it’s the size of Victoria, would doubling it take it to Saltspring or Galiano?), and finally I started thinking about how fast it would have to be expanding to cross half the country in a single exhale, and I found myself slowing my breathing as I didn’t want to break the laws of physics.

Yeah that’s a relaxing excercise. “Tear the universe apart at the seams! Now breath calmly in through your nose…” Right.

One of the students has a blackbelt from a different brand of Aikido, and Sensei allowed him to show two or three different throws that he had learned. They were geared for a large attacker to be taken down by a small/light defender, and since I’m a big guy… well… heh.

I found one particular throw really, really effective:

Aikido Yokomen Uchi Irimi Nage
Uploaded by Aikidoclub_Carrieres

That’s a much more flourishey version with lots of spinning around - my basic variant did the same particular motions but with a taste of minimalism.

I found it really interesting as the attacker, as your leading leg is like a solid tree trunk nailed to the ground - if the defender tried to push you back it just wouldn’t work. So the defender first pulls you a bit off balance, does a half step to yank your head down (which makes your leading leg buckle), and once your leading leg is gone a tiny shove backwards makes you topple. It was really cool.

After that we did more Jo training. I think the word is - kata? Which means single-person doing a routine with a Jo. I did 3 steps last time, and this day got up to 13 steps. It feels really neat to swing that piece of wood around in a controlled fashion (and having it effective as well).

I played on my school team from the age of about 12 to 18, and then for my college’s club team, but my equipment bag was stolen out of my car about two years ago in Denver and I hadn’t picked up a stick since. Now, I have purchased a combination of new and lightly used equipment using craigslist, eBay, and Laxzilla.com and am preparing for my first game this Wednesday.

It’s also the first of two nights that Ween will be playing in Denver, so I will definitely have my hands full, but it should be fun and I’m hoping that my teammates are both cool and skilled (but not too much better than me). I’ll keep you posted. Here’s to grown men having fun!

We’re now a mere five days away from The Dark Knight. I was planning on putting together a big review of all the viral marketing stuff, and include all the links to the different websites, but the Joker was kind enough to do that for us. Not only that, but he also took the time to vandalize all the other sites as part of his last game before the movie.

In preparation of the big wrap up, I got a phone call from, well basically, from the movie today. I’d given them my phone number previously for a viral thing that ended up with Commissioner Gordon entrapping me. Basically, the call today was a collage of the audio from earlier viral fun like the guy the Joker was holding hostage, the Harvey Dent hostage negotiation, Gotham News talk shows and the aforementioned Commissioner Gordon call. This viral campaign has been really well done on all fronts and people are certainly well hyped for the movie. You can get a lot of the specific audio and video from the campaign on this site.

Lots of glowing reviews. Kevin Smith called it the best comic book movie ever made. Certainly looks that way to me. Obviously I’m biased, but there’s just so much great potential, and every little bit of the movie I’ve seen (and I have seen a decent bit, at least 13 minutes worth of little clips between released scenes like the Two-Face tease and the various TV trailers) has been stellar. I’ve had to swear off the internet scavenging though.

There’s just too much access these days, you know? It must be frustrating for Chris Nolan, et al, to look on the nerd websites and see camera phone pictures from press screenings. They seem to have put a decent amount of care into controlling what information is available and what isn’t. Through following the movie online, watching spy shots of the filming in Chicago for the better part of the year, I’ve got some of the basic points down. I know a lot of the big beats. But I have no idea about how a lot of them fit together. And I know there are things I’m missing as well. I’ve got a lot of random puzzle pieces and only a few of them seem to fit together. Sure, there’s been a fair number of leaked photos, but there wasn’t anything too spoilerish out there before they started screenings.

Apparently there are two very spoilerish pictures out there, purportedly, one of each Joker and Two-Face (possibly the fates of each character at the end of the movie?). Took me about 5 minutes to find them. But I thought about it, and decided not to open the page. I’ve seen enough. In the meantime, I did download <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KX6iDPyTuqQ" title=""Agressive Expansion"" target="_blank">the score, and today picked up the animated DVD, Batman: Gotham Knight. It’s 6 stories in 6 different styles that all sort of link together. It’s really well done, though. It’s anime-styled and really comes across better than the last DC animated project, Darwin Cooke’s Justice League: The New Frontier. Not that TNF was bad, but it seemed a little underwhelming. There is a preview on Gotham Knight of a new Wonder Woman animated movie, which looks decent. Keri Russel is playing the titular heroine, with Alfred Molina as the villain. I like both those casting choices. I couldn’t buy Keri Russel as Wonder Woman in live-action, but I think she has a good voice for it. As for Molina, he gets to play Ares, the God of War. Wasn’t that Kratos?

Anyway, the other big thing people are talking about is obviously, Heath Ledger’s performance, which is being bandied about for an Oscar nomination. Honestly, I hope he gets nominated, but doesn’t win it. It may be a cliche that it’s “an honour just to be nominated,” but it is probably true. When people are running down an actor’s accomplishments, they mention the nominations as well as the awards. But my concern is that I expect if he did win it, regardless of whether or not he deserves it, a lot of cynical types will bitch that he just got it because he’s dead. But we still haven’t seen the film. Maybe this time next week, we’ll all be talking about how it would be insane not to give him a posthumous Oscar. We’ll find out soon.

Oh, also, I should mention that I just watched the newest Venture Brothers episode, “What goes down, must come up” and this one was as funny as the previous seasons. All you need to know is that Dr. Venture got lost in the sewers beneath the compound, and the guy from Prodigy was running around down there.

“He just keeps saying he’s the Firestarter. I’m trapped in a sewer with a confessed arsonist Brock!”
