SASpoiler: A Wordpress Plugin

Posted on May 9th, 2007 by weasel

I’ve always wanted to have the ability to add a spoiler to my text, for all those times when I’m reviewing movies or making lame jokes. All the plugins that already exist to accomplish this tend to have big fancy AJAX or Javascript interfaces that physically hide the text from sight. That’s not what I wanted! A simple mouseover-reveal would do the trick for me.

It took me an hour to do and a bit of research, but I ended up mimicking the style used in the Something Awful forums.

The plugin is constructed in a very simple, elegant fashion and doesn’t have any configuration interfaces or anything like that.

INSTALLATION

Upload the plugin to Wordpress’ plugin directory and activate it in your admin panel!

CONFIGURATION

There is nothing to configure! If you want to change the colors around (say, if you have a black-background blog for example) you can do so by editing the plugin file directly. It’s all clearly labeled in there and you shouldn’t run into any problems.

USAGE

Simply enclose the text you wish to use with a
tag. For example, typing this:

The gimmick to The Sixth Sense is that Bruce Willis is
gay
results in this:

The gimmick to The Sixth Sense is that Bruce Willis is gay

DOWNLOAD

Download the .PHP or the .RAR file… today!

You might add some padding or something on either side of the spoiler text just to make it a little easier to read. as it stands the text just butts up against the edges of the black and the contrast makes it hard to read.

Not REALLY hard mind you but from an aesthetic standpoint it would look better.

You mean something like this ? I’d think the user would insert appropriate spacing as they’d see fit, but if you think it would help…

    Nice said,

You shouldn’t put the real spoiler in the first sample usage :P

Thanks for this! It is the first one I’ve ever gotten to work (I only tried one other, but still…)

Put those fingers to the keys!
